Evolving Information Age technologies are changing the ways the military will train and plan for future military operations. Real-world information systems are being linked with simulations, providing the capability to train and rehearse for actual military operations. In a study funded by the United States' Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a comparison of the tasks associated with large-scale simulation training exercise and mission planning was conducted to determine the benefits of developing an integrated toolset. This paper discusses the results of the functional task decomposition and suggests how an integrated toolset could result in both cost savings and greater effectiveness.
