Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about tutoring that isn’t answered here? Feel free to contact us.

1. Is tutoring and coaching effective?

There have been many studies on the effectiveness of tutoring and coaching and the results have been mixed. In some studies, students show large gains in learning and retention and in others, tutoring has little impact. This variation is caused by the different methodologies being used. This is why ThoughtLink relies on data collection and analysis, using before and after surveys that include both objective and subjective criteria. We are sure you will see a positive difference in your student’s scholastic success after experiencing ThoughtLink’s exceptional tutors.

2. What is the difference between a tutor and a coach?

Tutors help students learn the material in individual courses while coaches help students with fundamental skills to be successful in school. ThoughtLink offers both tutors and coaches to support scholastic success, whether that is helping with a specific class, or offering coaching in topics such as study skills, time and stress management, note taking, or deconstructing large problems. Rarely does a student just have problems with one topic area.  By uncovering the underlying root of the problem, our staff can focus on giving students the fundamentals to succeed across a wide-range of areas.

3. How can coaching help my student with homework?

ThoughtLink’s coaching in the fundamentals can make students more efficient at managing their time and coursework. ThoughtLink examines how students are currently planning their homework and then, working with the student, they develop a plan to make their time and study habits more effective. This might include understanding how to reduce stress and distractions, be more rested, and how best to incorporate time for socializing and extra-curricular activities.

4. How do I pay for the services?

ThoughtLink works with you to assess your student’s needs and the subject or skills where they can get the greatest benefit. Based on this assessment, ThoughtLink recommends a tutoring/coaching plan fit to your student’s needs. Payment is required in advance (by personal check or major credit card). If, for any reason you decide to reduce the number of visits, a refund will be offered for the unused sessions. We work with you to assure your satisfaction.

5. Does ThoughtLink help with test preparation (e.g., SAT)?

Yes. ThoughtLink offers one-on-one tutoring to help your student achieve better scores on standardized tests, such as the ACT, PSAT and SAT. Many people have found that this one-on-one test preparation offers many advantages over the large group test preparation companies. With one-on-one test preparation, the materials can be customized to fit your student’s specific needs.

6. Can tutoring help home schooled children?

Home school families have the skills and abilities to tackle a wide range of subjects and skill areas. However, occasionally there is a subject that the parent finds challenging or would prefer not to teach. Offering tutors/coaches for home schooled children can often bring a new outside approach to learning, as well as new ways to tackle difficult concepts.

7. Can tutoring help my student’s testing skills?

ThoughtLink offers a special program that identifies issues around taking tests and improving test scores. Often times, the problem with taking tests is associated with test anxiety. ThoughtLink coaches students with test anxiety so they can take tests calmly and confidently. Other times, low test scores are a result of poor organizational skills, note taking, study habits or learning preference. ThoughtLink offers an in-depth assessment to identify the problem and the customized solution to improve test scores.

8. How can a tutor help build motivation?

Most students lack motivation because they feel that they have been beaten by the system or that they lack the skills and confidence to take control over their academic career. ThoughtLink’s tutors focus on building a student’s confidence and once a student begins to experience success, there is no better way to build their motivation to continue to succeed.
